4th of July Blog Tour

The first thing that I would like to do is give you your free project.  I have decided to use my Fit to be Quarter ruler to make this adorable little quilt.  Here is a picture of the quilt:

I trimmed the 1/4 square triangles using the Fit to be Quarter ruler and they came out so perfect.  The unfinished size is 2" so they are nice and tiny.  It's a fun little quilt to make as a framed quilt, table topper or candle mat.  I am also going to work on making it larger.  I have the instructions for trimming the 1/4 square triangles on my website.  Here is the link: http://www.opengatequilts.com/howtovideo.html Here is the instructions for the mini quilt:


We have also decided to provide you with either a favorite summer time drink or dessert.  Knowing me, you know that I would pick a dessert.  I decided to give you a unconventional cheesecake recipe.  It uses Jell-o an Dream Whip.  It is so light and fluffy and very yummy!  It reminds me of summer. 

One of my favorite things to do on 4th of July is to hang out with my gang.  I'm not that into fireworks so the thought of going downtown to view them doesn't have much appeal.  I love to sew all day, have a BBQ in the evening and spend time at home.  What is your favorite thing to do on the 4th of July or your summer holiday?  Leave a comment on your favorite thing to do and I will enter your name into the drawing to win a Fit to be Quarter ruler and a kit for the Quarter Square Triangle Mini Quilt.  Comment from now until Thursday night and I will announce the winner Friday morning.

My favorite thing for July 4th is to stay home, sew or work on beading or read, BBQ something in the evening...and hope the monsoon rains start, to cool us down here in southern AZ! (Been 105-110 here lately!)

My favorite thing for July 4th is homemade vanilla ice cream with fresh peaches on top. We use an old fashioned hand turn maker, sit on the porch remarking about the heat and take turns turning. Love it!

This July 4th we are staying home and having a sweet niece over for cook out. We will just eat sit and talk, maybe stitch some later.No fireworks this year as too dry and hot!

My favorite thing to do on the 4th of July is spending time with my family and celebrating my brother who was born on this day.We have a cookout and then make homemade ice cream. In the evening I fit in a few hours to do some quilting.

oh awesome! i just love the block!! My favorite part is the parade our town puts on every 4th. This year because its on a weekday, the Renaissance festival comes with all kinds of fun animals and the elephants!!

My favorite thing is going to watch the fireworks. We used to go into town and watch them when they went off over the river. But this year we'll stay home and sit on the edge of our ridge, and watch the shows from afar.

Since I'm still working full time, gardening time is hard to come by. 4th of July usually will find me in the garden in the morning, patio picnic at dinner time. Sometimes we make it out to the fireworks in the evening. Not every year. But every day ends with a needle in my hand. The joys of hand quilting :)

We just spent a peaceful day at our home in the mountains. We are able to see and hear distant fireworks and that's close enough. I'm going to sew this afternoon and listen to a good book on tape.

I'm not one for going out into crowds to watch fireworks. Besides, fireworks drive the dogs NUTS! I love staying home and grilling out with a few close friends. It's also great if I can find some time to sew.

My favorite way to spend the day is with family at a barbecue. Fireworks aren't my thing either unless we're at a Disney park where the fireworks are really impressive.
I'd love to win your ruler since I don't have that one. I have the Fit To Be Geese ruler and used it to make almost 300 perfect geese.

I also like to stay home. Not interested in braving the traffic and crowds to see fireworks. I love to stay home and spend a lazy day sewing and watching movies. Then grilling something for dinner.

My favorite thing to do the 4th of July pretty much echoes yours. Normally I am the one who has to have the cookouts, but this year my daughter is, so I am spending time at home today quilting and will spend time with family this afternoon. Perfect day!

For the 4th of July we go hot air ballooning and our town has a balloon festival that goes along with the Freedom Festival that our town has during the 4th. There is a big parade, fireworks concert and show, carnival, fun run and the list goes on. It is a great place to be on the 4th of July.

I love to gather family and friends and have a cookout. We have neighbors who put on a fireworks display right on our court so we don't have to go anywhere to enjoy the lights in the sky.

Favorite or not, I stay home in the evening to keep my dog calm. I think a lot of others probably do this same thing. During the day, we garden. She likes to help me pull weeds.

The parade! and then wondering around to greet the other watchers. Many families have get togethers and you see those who have moved away...and new babies too!
Today was a perfect Iowa day for a parade!

Happy 4th of July, Monique! What a cute little pattern - and it will surely make up fast with your ruler! Mr. Squash and I and some friends will walk down the street later to the park - peruse the craft booths, partake in some food goodies, listen to the band play in our 100+ year old bandstand, then walk home and have a nice dinner! I might even fit a little sewing in before the neighborhood fireworks begin! And I think tomorrow I might be making that cheescake!

I am assist my son with his 4H project quilt as he is home on break over the 4th then he goes back to Luther College until the weekend. I am hoping to do some sewing also today but when it is time for him to do his projects--I let him have the machine. He is working on a rainbow one. I am looking at the project Monique has posted and thinking what fabric I should make it out of. We will be heading to fireworks about 10 miles from us and then its back to work. Hope Monique will be making it back to New Hampton soon. We have had family time over the weekend. Happy 4th Everyone.

The day is half over and we've already mowed our huge yard, met some friends from Texas (we're in Kansas) for some coffee at an area restaurants, and watered the outdoor floors in preparation for our 100 degree day. I'm slow cooking some sirloin to throw on the grill tonight, and now I'm headed to the Bernina to work on my son's wedding quilt. The nearby Country Club will have a huge fireworks display later this evening, so I think everything I wanted to do today will be accomplished. It's a great day to remember my father and his four years plus during WWII and what he sacrificed for us to be able to 'veg' out today. Happy Freedom, everyone!

We have never been big fans of fireworks. Over 50 years ago,I started (accidentally of course) a fire in a neighbors field when I was seven by throwing a sparkler. The neighbor was and auto mechanic and he nearly lost his entire shop due to my silly play. He was so kind, as were the firemen and my folks because I was so young and it was supposed to go up in the air and down on our grass but it went across the dirt road instead...well, let's just say I never was any good at pitching a baseball either. At least the story had a happy ending that time, but I never participated in fireworks again. So when our girls were growing up, every 4th of July we would take them to a movie and to A&W after, then watch the Ogden City fireworks from our roof in Washington Terrace (Utah, for those that are not familiar). Now that we are empty nesters, we just relax and enjoy the weekend and patiently wait for all the neighborhood kids to finish with their fireworks so that we can take our dog off her tranquilizers, LOL. This year, I may need some of my own if these hugely noisy fireworks go on much longer. It has been constant from about 11am until after midnight every single day for the last week with not end in sight...*sigh* I think I need some sewing therapy! I love the little quilt pattern and I would also like to try a bigger version. So many possibilities. Thanks so much for sharing. Hugs...

I like staying home and just enjoying the day. When dinner time comes around we like to walk to the 4th of July Festival at a nearby park and find some yummy food. My Grandmothers were known for their cheesecakes and I think your recipe is very similar. One Grandmother used lemon jello and the other used lime jello. :) I think there might have been a little competition going on there. My fingers are crossed that I win you new ruler Monique! I really don't like the fireworks scene that much. The 4th is a great day to quilt in my mind. An extra day for me to try to get something done in the quilt room. Thank you for the chance to win.

In our town it is all about the PARADE at 11 am. Eating at food vendors like the cattlemen griling steak sandwichs, sweet corn from the Kiwanas and homemade pie and ice cream from the Lutheran ladies.
Not having to cook the meal- that's a holiday for me too.

Every year we go to my sisters house and bbq, hang out in their pool and celebrate my sons birthday. Today was a perfect day and we had a great time - though now we're all a bit sunburnt.

My favorite thing to do is get together with ALL of my kids, their spouses and my grandkids and have a cookout and swim. Then we all head out to Williamsburg for the fireworks..(yea we like them). We take a picnic dinner, some cute picnic quilts to sit on :) and eat, play, laugh and visit until it gets dark and then we watch the fireworks all together. So much fun!!!

I am so NOT a summer person because where I live in California, it will get to be over 100 degrees this summer YUCK!! so during the summer I like to go to my parent's house in the woods, where it's a little cooler and enjoy my time up there. My son is finally old enough to play in the little plastic tub/pool my parent's bought him and the last time we were there, we had to literally drag him out cuz he was having sooo much fun but was shivering from the cold!! btw, that ruler looks totally cool!

We like our Independence Days nice and quiet, so we stay home, work in the yard, eat some watermelon, take a nice nap, basically just enjoy being together. We had a wonderful day today and I hope you did, too. Thanks for the giveaway.

I love to spend at least part of the 4th of July weekend at the family summer cabin on Puget Sound (Washington state). But I try to be home for 4th of July night to keep my kitty company. He gets freaked out by the fireworks. It's 11:30 p.m. and sounds like a war zone outside. I hear sirens and I'm hoping no one's house is on fire.

Dh and I are empty nesters this summer and prefer to avoid the crowds. We went for a photography shoot/walk in a nature preserve, bbq'd dinner and ate on our deck. WONDERFUL day.

I love a family cookout. This year we had a picnic/cookout. I took water pistols for all the little ones & they had a blast. Some played washers, others softball. Lots of good food and laughs.

For the 4th I enjoy our neighborhood cookout. Everybody is so busy these days that it's nice to just relax and see everyone again. Plus, there's no traveling!

I love watching fireworks from a distance, they are so pretty. But I don't like the loud bangs and pops--too nervous I guess. My favorite way to see them is over the water. The reflections are awesome.

We love to get together with friends for a barbeque and just take time to catch up with everyone. Life is so busy, that sometimes it's hard to get together regularly. The weather was absolutely perfect this year, too!

Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays because we always make it a family day. We usually do the local parade, then find a festival with music and hangout on a blanket till the fireworks.

Fun to read all the comments about what other quilters like to do on the 4th - like a patchwork quilt.

As for me, when my kids were small we would gather on the block and all the neigbors would pull their fireworks and light them in the middles of the street with a bucket of water handy. Since then fireworks have been banned, so my grandkids won't know the fun of watching stars burst before their little eyes or sparklers sprinkling fire dust over their little hands. sigh

In any event we all hung out, ate, and swam in the pool - a fun day.

My favorite thing on the 4th of July is the fireworks. We used to go to the displays in the city. Now we just have our own little neighborhood ones in the street. I also like to watch the ones on TV.

Family is always my favorite peeps to hang out with although with being such a big family it's hard to get us all together. Hillis, Party of 12 including inlaws and Grandkids make for fun anytime.

Our favorite to do on the 4th of July is to get together with family and watch the local parade. We then go back and grill out and follow it up with homemade ice cream! The family just loves it. This has been so much fun. I will definitely do this again.

We always have a family BBQ and then go watch the community fireworks show. It isn't your typical show. The fireworks are times with really great music and they are shot off of a barge on a lake. They are lower than most and just really make you feel like a part of the show. Thank you for the great giveaway!

4th of July usually isn't a big holiday around our house. We cookout and sometimes or maybe not go watch fireworks. They were rained out this year, plus my husband was called into work. So it wasn't a typical 4th!

We went to events over the weekend and spent a quiet day on the Fourth. Our guests had to leave rather early to get back for work on Tuesday so that was a lonesome end to a great weekend.

I did my favorite thing on the 4th - I stayed home and pieced a doll quilt topper! So relaxing. We were over at a neighbors home on the 3rd for a 2 hour fireworks display - lots of family and friends sharing their fireworks. We live 1 1/2 miles from town and could hear and see the fireworks on the 4th. Good enough for me. Thanks for hosting this fun blog tour! HUGS... and stitches

What a gorgeous day! I am glad to be an American and we fly the US flag from our deck. I love the 4th of July, today we will be home, barbecue, I will study since I'm in nursing school, sew a little, watch my guy train horses while I sit in the shade, and call my family in other states. Later we will drive to a spot, park in a field drive and watch nearby fireworks and enjoy the beautiful evening. I was looking for a dessert recipe to fix today, I found one, your recipe sound delicious and refreshing, thank you!

My favorite thing to do is spend time with my family at home away from crowds. My husband grills, and I cook side dishes. Usually my mother-in-law comes over, too. She usually brings a scrumptious treat, and we all enjoy eating, relaxing, and visiting.

As a family we plant in the backyard, play in the kiddue pool and visit a local park my husband played at as a child. My kids love that is all about family... and it connects them to what's truly important. Of course we watch the fireworks after a family dinner.

The 4th of July is just perfect if I can take a long walk with my daughter who is here for the holiday, sit on the porch with the rest of the family, also visiting, and have them all around me and my husband for a bbq dinner. It's the best way to celebrate that we are simply free to enjoy life. Thanks to our Founding Fathers and all who have made the USA a free country.

My father is from the Midwest. He always gathered us and any children in the neighborhood to compete in sssack races, whellbarrow races, and other old fashioned fun races.I have kept the tradition going. And, of course, a cookout!

My mother has made a cheesecake recipe with gelatin and whip cream for a long time now. It is so delicious and so light- this one looks similar so I am sure it would be wonderful.
I live in Western Canada and we celebrate Canada Day on July 1. For me it is the beginning of my summer break as I am a teacher.

Happy Friday!  Today is my day to join in the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Blog Tour .  Yes, that means that I have a block included in the magazine!  The tour has been going on all week so make sure that you check out the other designers that are involved in the tour.   Here is the cover of the magazine: It's so great that they have printed 7 - 100 Block Magazines!  I am also so proud to say that I have been in all 7 issues!  My block is called Tiara...do you sense a theme these days?  I have a book coming up next week (squee!) called Diamond Traditions and I called this block Tiara...do you think I'm a princess?!  My husband sure thinks so!  Anyway, here is my block: I used the purple colorway of my fabric with Maywood Studio, Royal Gardens .  I love the way this block has a center that you can fussy-cut or use an interested print inside.  It was fun to make and there are so many possibilities to make a quilt with it.  Here are some ideas: Simple on point with s

Quiltmaker 100 Block Blog Tour

Hi Everyone! Glad you could drop by for the blog tour.  It is day 2, make sure that you check out all the featured bloggers on the tour.  You can see who is blogging today and all week on Quiltmaker's Blog .
